Appointment of Els Baert as President of the BEC
Els Baert has been elected President of the BEC following the resignation of the previous president. She was formally accepted by the BEC Board as successor, both as board member and president, for the remaining mandate until May 2027. Her appointment was formally ratified at the General Assembly in May 2026, and her presidency runs until May 2027.
Career background
Els Baert is Department Manager of the Environment Research Center (ERC) at Daikin Europe, where she leads activities related to European environmental regulation, energy efficiency policy, product safety, and standardization. She has been with Daikin since 1998, giving her more than 25 years of experience in the field of environmental policy and technical standards.
She holds a degree in Chemical Engineering, complemented by a postgraduate degree in Environmental Sanitation, and has long been involved in European and international standardization activities at ISO, CEN, IEC, and CENELEC, with a strong focus on safety and performance standards.
In parallel, she serves as Chair of the EPEE Ecodesign Working Group, where she plays a key role in linking technical standardization with EU regulatory frameworks, including Ecodesign and Energy Labelling.
Els Baert has held several leading roles in international standardization committees, including:
- Convenor of CEN/TC 182/WG6
- Convenor of ISO/TC 86/SC 1/WG1
In addition, she has acted as an expert member and Belgian Delegate in numerous working groups and technical committees within CEN, ISO and IEC, covering areas such as refrigerant safety, performance standards, energy efficiency and product classification.
In recognition of her long standing and impactful contribution to standardization, she received the NBN Award for Standardization in 2018, awarded by the Belgian standards body.
