IEC TC 125 (“e-Transporter”) Working Groups and Plenary meetings - Shanghai, Fall 2025

19.11.2025

From World Standards Day on the 14th of October 2025 to 16 October 2025, SEARI (Shanghai Electrical Apparatus Research Institute) hosted the Fall IEC TC 125 (“e-Transporter”) Working Groups and Plenary meetings in Shanghai.

The event was followed by an International Symposium on e-Transporters Standardization and Embodied Intelligence. Belgium holds the secretariat of IEC TC 125 and by this channel supports the deployment of safe and green micromobility.
The scope of IEC TC 125 covers devices like electrical kick scooters, hoverboard self-balancing scooters, etc. but also cargo e-transporters.
Autonomous cargo e-transporters are a very hot topic in the context of labour (drivers) shortages and ecological transition (last miles green logistics).

General safety and performance requirements of e-Transporters are addressed by WG 1 and WG 4, while WG 6 is specific for autonomous e-Transporters safety. EMC requirements and Interface aspects (trajectory cloud computing ...) are the focus of WG 9 and WG 10 respectively.
TC 125 is a relatively young TC and good collaboration with other regional or international technical committees is of outermost importance to best serve standards users. Two examples of such collaboration are:

  • ahG 8, which makes the link with European developments (battery regulation related standards, CEN TC 354 WG 4 deliverables, etc ...).
  • JWG84, which writes standard(s) covering safety aspects of batteries for light electric vehicles and others if needed. The expertise of IEC TC21 (Secondary cells and batteries), IEC TC125 (e-Transporters) and ISO TC149 (Cycles) is combined in this Joint Working Group.

Mr. Bram Rotthier (IEC TC 125 secretary) and Mr. François Rummens (IEC TC 125 assistant secretary) made an intervention during the symposium following IEC TC 125 WG and plenary meetings, demonstrating Belgian commitment to promote IEC TC 125 work. In his lecture “IEC/TC 125 International standards: Enabling an Innovative and Sustainable Future”, Mr. Rummens provided a global picture of IEC TC 125 work in the frame of green micromobility and last miles logistics.

Mr. Rotthier gave an introduction to the European regulatory framework for light electric vehicles, discussing not only the technical legislation but also the terms of use for e-scooters in the various European member states.
