New Version of IEC 62305: Enhanced Protection Against Lightning Strikes

26.03.2025

One of the major risks to electrical installations is lightning strikes and power surges. The newly released third edition of the international standard NBN EN IEC 62305:2024 – "Protection Against Lightning" introduces several effective measures to improve safety.

This set of standards addresses the protection of buildings and electrical installations against lightning and consists of four parts. The latest edition includes several technical revisions, such as an updated risk assessment procedure, the introduction of Thunder Warning Systems (TWS) as a potential mitigation measure, references to product standards for components, and new minimum thickness requirements for metal parts used as lightning conductors to prevent hotspot issues.

Overview of NBN EN IEC 62305:2024

  • NBN EN IEC 62305-1:2024 – General Principles - Covers the fundamental principles for protecting structures, installations, contents, and people from lightning.
  • NBN EN IEC 62305-2:2024 – Risk Management - Provides a procedure for evaluating risks associated with lightning strikes to determine appropriate protective measures.

  • NBN EN IEC 62305-3:2024 – Protection of Structures and People - Specifies requirements for lightning protection systems (LPS) to prevent physical damage to buildings and injuries from touch and step voltages.
  • NBN EN IEC 62305-4:2024 – Protection of Electrical and Electronic Systems - Outlines requirements for Surge Protection Measures (SPM) to safeguard systems against disturbances caused by electromagnetic lightning pulses (LEMP).

With these updates, the latest edition of IEC 62305 further strengthens lightning protection measures, ensuring enhanced safety for electrical systems and infrastructure.
