As a consequence, to prepare an International Electrotechnical Vocabulary aiming at the standardization and coordination of the terms relating to electrical sciences and techniques for use in the technical language and literature, in teaching, in technical specifications and in commercial exchanges, and at giving their equivalents in the different languages.

Standardization in the field of documentation, graphical symbols and representations of technical information.

To prepare and maintain international standards relating to equipment for use where there is a hazard due to the possible presence of explosive atmospheres of gases, vapours, mists or combustible dusts.

Dependability is the ability to perform as and when required and is time dependent in application. Dependability can be expressed in terms of core attributes of availability, reliability, maintainability and supportability that are tailored to application-specific functional and service attributes.

To prepare standards concerning protection against electric shock arising from equipment, from installations and from systems without limit of voltage.

To prepare standards including appropriate test methods for degrees of protection provided by enclosures against ingress of solid foreign objects and water and against access to dangerous parts.

To prepare standards for standardized procedures for the calculation of short-circuit currents, and of their thermal and mechanical effects.

To prepare standards and technical reports in the field of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), with particular emphasis on general application and use by product committees. (Horizontal function).

To prepare standards for equipment, systems, and methods used in the fields of measurement, test, recurrent test, monitoring, evaluation, generation and analysis of steady state and dynamic electrical and electromagnetic quantities, as well as their calibrators.

To prepare EMC standards and guidelines with particular emphasis on the application of the EMC Directive and other EC Directives that contain EMC references.
