IEC 60364-5-52 Set for Revision by TC 64 MT2: A Critical Update for Low-Voltage Electrical Installations

24.09.2024

The established standard of IEC 60364-5-52, edition 3 from 2009, is set to undergo a significant revision by the Maintenance Team 2 (MT2) of Technical Committee 64 (TC 64).

This standard is a cornerstone within the IEC 60364 series, which governs low-voltage electrical installations worldwide. The revision has been deemed necessary due to the rapid evolution of new technologies, applications, and practices, especially considering environmental climate considerations and the need for resilient infrastructure, often exposed to the elements.

National committees have been notified and invited to contribute their inputs on a variety of topics crucial to the update. These include:

  • Additional information related to wiring systems for both AC and DC applications.
  • Integration of wiring systems for communication networks.
  • Coexistence strategies between different types of wiring systems.
  • Application of new cable technologies.
  • Utilization of various cable insulation materials.
  • Introduction of new kinds of wiring systems.
  • Incorporation of new wiring system elements, such as installation couplers.
  • Considerations for modular building applications.
New era for electrotechnical infrastructures

The first meeting of MT2 is scheduled to take place in October in Barcelona, where these inputs will be thoroughly evaluated and discussed. The revision process is expected to ensure that the IEC 60364-5-52 standard remains relevant and robust, supporting the ongoing advancements in electrical installation practices while addressing the growing demands for sustainability and durability in infrastructure design.

This revision marks an important step in the ongoing evolution of electrical standards, ensuring that they continue to meet the challenges of modern electrical installations and the changing environmental landscape.
