Product Specific Rules for rotating electrical machines and approach for environmental product and material efficiency assessments
Cenelec CLC/TC 2 has launched a New Work Item Proposal (NWI - TC2_81588-nwi) to develop a European Standard (EN) defining Product Specific Rules (PSR) for Rotating Electrical Machines.
This standard will help facilitate and harmonize the preparation of Product Environmental Declarations (EPDs) or environmental claims related to such machines.
The aim is to specify the processes and requirements for conducting Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) within the context of environmental product assessments for rotating electrical machines, whether they operate direct-on-line or are intended for frequency converter (variable speed drive) operation.
This initiative is clearly aligned with the interests of the European Economic Area (EEA), as it directly supports the implementation of the EU Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC, the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR – 2024/1781), and the EU Circular Economy Action Plan.
Although the objective of this standard is not to define the Environmentally Conscious Design (ECD) of rotating electrical machines, it will focus on assessment, measurement, and the provision of relevant information on material efficiency aspects. By doing so, it supports the circularity goals set out in various LCA scenarios and underpins the quantitative green claims promoted by current and upcoming European regulations.
To achieve this, the standard will derive and adapt the EN 4555x series for rotating electrical machines and will also take into account EN 50693, benefiting manufacturers conducting LCAs for their products.
This standard is intended to support the forthcoming EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the associated Delegated Acts that will apply to all product categories and systems within its scope.
As part of its efforts to deepen understanding of this topic and ongoing electrotechnical standardization, BEC is organizing hybrid training session on May 13th. Details available on the BEC website, along with other initiatives.
This also serves as a call to the Belgian electrical motor industry to actively participate in this New Work Item.
