Standardization Initiatives for Innovative Energy Integration

Offshore Wind, Solar, Wave & Tidal Energy in Belgium

Over the past few decades, Belgium has earned a strong international reputation in the development of offshore wind energy.

Building on this momentum, the country is now expanding its focus to other renewable energy sources—with exciting new initiatives in wave and tidal energy, and early steps toward offshore solar parks.

But real innovation lies in combining these technologies. Integrated projects that unite wind, solar, wave, and tidal power could dramatically improve energy yield, optimize sea-space use, and support Belgium’s transition to a sustainable energy future.

Standardization: The Foundation for Reliable Innovation

To support this growing ecosystem, standardization efforts are critical. Key international technical committees are already active:

• TC 82 – Solar photovoltaic energy systems

• TC 88 – Wind energy generation systems

• TC 114 – Marine energy, including wave and tidal

In Belgium, the Belgian Electrotechnical Committee (BEC) represents these interests and contributes to global efforts through the IECRE conformity assessment system. This ensures technologies are tested, trusted, and interoperable across global markets.

Momentum is Building

BEC is currently advancing expertise and activities in both wind and tidal energy, and is aiming to create critical mass in standardization for combined offshore energy initiatives. These efforts are essential for scaling and integrating renewable sources across Belgium’s energy landscape.
