• the “BEC online services”, i.e. all websites, (mobile) applications and internet services that are offered by the BEC and give access to the BEC content;

We use the data we keep on experts to enroll them in technical committees and the BEC, IEC and CENELEC working groups, as well as their industry operators. If they so wish, experts can authorize us to use their data to:
• publish their expert profile on the BEC website;

• inform them of new areas of standardisation.
They may also, if they wish, provide more detailed personal information to help us improve our services.
Buyers of individual standards through the BEC web shop

How does the BEC collect your personal data?
The personal data you share with us
To access some of the BEC online services, you are required to create an BEC account. When you do this, we may request a few personal details from you, such as your email address, name, date of birth, gender, postal address, postcode, industry or other business information. We store these details in your BEC profile. We also collect your personal data when you email us with your questions, comments or complaints about our services, for example, or when you subscribe online to a BEC activity, such as a standardisation committee, training course or event.
The personal data we gather based on your use of BEC online services
We gather data on the BEC online services you use and how you use them, for example, when you visit one of our websites, read our newsletter or consult a standard. This allows us to adapt the BEC online services to suit your needs and interests and gain a better understanding of how our experts and our customers use our services.
In the process, we use two kinds of information:
• Log data, such as IP address, pages opened, mouse clicks, the date and time of your visit, the browser you use, and so on. These data allow us to recognize you and tell us something about the way you use our services, such as the articles you have read, the sound clips you listened to or the videos you have watched, and whether you read, listened or watched to the end.
• Device data, such as the IP address, brand, type and operating system of your device and so on. These data give us a rough indication of your location, which can be useful when providing certain services.

The personal data we obtain from third parties
When you log onto the BEC's online services through an account you hold with a social networking site or make use of the network functions available through our online services, you give the social networking site permission to share several clearly defined personal data.
By default, these are your basic profile details on the social networking site (name, email address, date of birth, postcode, gender), which we add to your BEC profile if we do not already have them. They may also include certain data relating to your behavior on the social networking site, such as likes. We can only use the data you share publicly on the social networking site and only if your personal settings on the social networking site allow us to do so. If you do not want this information to be shared, we recommend that you change your settings on the social networking site.
We may also collect personal information from other reliable online or offline information providers. The BEC will only do this if the third party has collected the data in a lawful manner and shared them with us in a lawful manner. If necessary, the BEC will ask you explicitly for permission to use these data.

The BEC online services are a dynamic and innovative environment. This means that we are constantly looking for better ways to provide custom services. This may imply that we introduce new applications and collect and/or use your data in another way. We will always communicate to you about this as transparently as possible in this privacy policy.
For what purpose do we use the personal data we collect?
To provide services
We generally use personal data to provide and maintain the BEC services. We may use them to notify you of a change, for example, or give notice of planned maintenance to the BEC online services, or to process your feedback on our services in the correct manner.
For your convenience
When you use the BEC online services through your BEC profile, we apply technology that recognizes you as a registered user and grants you immediate access to the service. This means that you don't have to enter your login credentials every time you visit this (these) the BEC online service(s) or wish to participate in interactive features available on BEC online services, such as competitions. In the case of some BEC online services, this technology can also remember exactly where you stopped watching and/or listening to BEC content.
To improve our services
We use personal data to gain insight into which BEC services and BEC content is of interest and use to our users. If we know what you are reading, watching and using, we can adapt our content dynamically and make our services more relevant. In this case, we may also invite you to participate in an online survey. This allows us to improve the BEC services and content on a continual basis and develop new services. And it allows us to keep our products and services as relevant as possible to our users.
To personalize BEC online services
The BEC aims to make the BEC online services as relevant as possible for every expert or user. If we use data that tell us something about where we think a user's interests lie, we can make the BEC services more personal. For example, this would allow the BEC to recommend content to suit your personal profile.
To update you about the BEC's products and services
The BEC may use contact details and any other data it collects to notify you of events, promotions, new services, and so on. We will only do this if we have your permission beforehand. You can always indicate that you no longer wish the BEC to contact you about these matters. Do so by following the ‘unsubscribe link’ at the bottom of the email or by sending an email to centraloffice@ceb-bec.be.
Do we give your data to third parties?
Unless you give us your permission to do so or we are obliged to do so by law, we will not give, sell or otherwise disclose your data to third parties. In some cases, however, third parties will have access to the data we have collected on you.
BEC suppliers
In providing our BEC services, we rely on a number of independent companies or service providers to handle the provision of some IT services in order to process payment transactions through our services, to conduct surveys, etc. It is possible that, when working on behalf of the BEC, these companies may gain access to certain data and information. The BEC permits this only when it is necessary for their work and requires from these companies the necessary guarantees related to access and use of this data and information.
Social media
Some BEC online services contain social media “buttons” for social networks such as LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. They allow you to share information on these platforms. The buttons are created and managed by the social networks themselves. The BEC has no control over the applications these companies make with the buttons. We recommend that you read the terms of use and the privacy policy on these social networking sites. The present privacy policy relates solely to the use of data collected by the BEC.
Authorities
In some situations, we will be obliged to disclose data or share it with the authorities. We may have to do this to comply with the law or a court order, for example, to detect or tackle fraud or security issues or protect the rights of the BEC.
Aggregate or anonymized information
For economic or social analyses, for example, the BEC may share aggregated or anonymized data with third parties. The BEC will take steps to ensure that third parties and/or the BEC are unable to identify you, directly or indirectly.
How do you manage or delete your data?
You may view the personal data related to you that the BEC stores at any time. You may also correct or delete any data that you find to be inaccurate or incomplete. You may also alter or delete certain personal details in your personal profile if you have one. In the other cases, you may always contact the BEC. If you wish to exercise your rights, we ask that you be as specific as you can to enable us to handle your request correctly. We should also point out that the identity of anyone who wishes to exercise their privacy rights must be verified to prevent those rights from being exercised by someone else.
You also have the right to object to the use of your data for direct marketing purposes.
How are your data secured?
The BEC considers it important that your data be processed securely. For this reason, we use several security measures and technologies to give your data adequate protection against unauthorized access, use, loss or publication. The BEC also conducts regular audits of these security measures. Unfortunately, the exchange of information over the internet is never 100% secure. Although we do everything in our power to ensure the security of your data, we cannot offer any absolute guarantees.
