CLC GA decides on Long Term Vision
The CENELEC General Assembly on 19/06/2026 will decide on the Long Term Vision (LTV) of the European Standardization System. The main drivers are the continuous EC push for a faster development of standards, particularly in new technological fields where the knowledge is in continuous development. To tackle this, CEN and CENELEC want to build a standardization hub, centralizing standards development in Europe. A second challenge is the push for free consultation of standards needing the standardization bodies to develop new services to maintain their economic viability.
As a European standardization hub, CEN-CENELEC would welcome content from third parties like consortia and fora and include these documents in a central catalogue. As these parties are less hindered by inclusivity concerns, they can deliver faster, meeting the speed requirements of the EC. By including this content, CEN-CENELEC can stay the preferred partner of the EC. CEN-CENELEC could also apply a quality check to the content making it more trustworthy. CEN-CENELEC would thus become the manager of the European standards catalogue taking a role in the maintenance and further development of these documents.
The content could be smartified thus allowing an easier exploitation by the users. In stead of selling documents, CEN-CENELEC will deliver services based on content and service descriptions.
Although practicalities need to be further developed, the CEN-CENELEC boards propose this to the General Assemblies as the way forward to tackle the current challenges.
