In the shoes of Thierry De Leeuw, new president of the Belgian mirror TC 79

23.02.2022

At the latest SMB-meeting, held on the 4th of February, Thierry De Leeuw was endorsed as new president of the Belgian mirror TC 79. The scope of this TC is to prepare standards for the protection of buildings, persons, areas, and properties against fraudulent actions having the purpose to enter in a place or to take or to use something without permission and other threat related to persons.

Thierry’s professional side…

Most of my career has been spent within the SOMFY Group. The follow-up of standards written by the CEN/TC 33 as well as the IEC 60335-2-97 standard was already part of my prerogatives. When I joined the CEB-BEC in 2013 as Technical Officer, I was even more confronted with the standardization process. The TC79 was one of the committees for which I acted as Belgian secretary.
I have joined ANPI recently. As an accredited laboratory and certification body, the monitoring of standardization is of course paramount. Keeping an active BEC-TC79 was therefore an obvious choice for ANPI.

The man behind the president in a few questions…
1. What’s the best book you’ve read recently?
I like different authors like Musso, Dan Brown, Bussi, Levi, Le Gardinier. Reading is then a moment of relaxation and escape.
2. What animal would you consider your spirit animal?

Probably the lion and not only because of my name 😉. Lions are known for their teamwork. They usually hunt their prey together. They are loyal to each other and work together.
3. What’s your favorite food?

I enjoy French, Italian and Asian cuisine and a good seafood platter from time to time
4. What’s your favorite movie?

I like action films and comedies in general.
5. Who inspires you?

I have a lot of respect for people like Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela or Dr Mukwege.
6. Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?

I have been sailing for a long time, both as an instructor and in competition. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to continue and I was also the only one in my family who liked this sport.
7. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

Time runs but you don't always realize it when you start working. Even if I am lucky to have a close-knit family, spending more time with my loved ones and my children in particular is something that would change.
8. What’s your biggest fear?

We have to keep our fears to ourselves. As far as standardization is concerned, I hope that the Belgian public authorities will invest better in this activity in order to guarantee neutrality and independence.
9. What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?

The nicest compliments received are the ones sent by customers and colleagues when I left the SOMFY Group and CEB-BEC. They are all the most beautiful as they are disinterested.
10. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

As a child, I wanted to become a sailor or an engineer. At the age of 8, I used to dismantle clocks that I unfortunately rarely managed to reassemble, much to my parents' dismay. I became an engineer and sailing was a hobby.
